Mammography is a type of breast imaging that uses low-dose X-rays to detect cancer.  Screening mammography is used in women without symptoms to detect cancer when it is very small and most treatable.  3-D Tomosynthesis is an advanced form of mammography where multiple very low-dose images of the breast are synthesized by a computer to generate a 3 dimensional image of the breast, which can make it easier to find small cancers, especially in patients with dense breast tissue. 

In patients with symptoms or an abnormal finding on screening mammogram, diagnostic mammogram is performed, which is tailored to the individual patient.  Breast ultrasound, breast MRI, or biopsy may be necessary to provide further information in select cases.  Breast ultrasound is especially helpful in evaluating palpable lumps, whether or not the mammogram appears normal.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) captures detailed images of the body without the use of radiation required with some other imaging modalities, namely X-ray and CT.  MRI is most commonly used to image the brain, spine, and joints such as the knee or shoulder. MRI can also be used for specialized imaging of the organs in the abdomen or pelvis, and can sometimes be helpful for specialized imaging of the breasts, uterus, or ovaries. An open MRI unit is available at Modesto Radiology Imaging in Modesto.  The open MRI unit can be more comfortable in patients who have claustrophobia or who don't fit comfortably in other MRI scanners.

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create real time images of the body.  The main uses are for looking at arteries and veins, organs in the abdomen, pregnancy ultrasound, and evaluating the uterus and ovaries.  Ultrasound is also used to evaluate palpable breast lumps and some abnormalities seen on mammograms.  Ultrasound does not use radiation and has no known side effects.

Bone densitometry (DEXA) is a non-invasive test that measures bone mineral density to assess if a person is an elevated risk of osteoporosis or fracture.  It is a common screening test for patients at increased risk of osteoporosis, especially women after menopause and both men and women taking certain medications that can cause decreased bone density.

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a study that uses fluoroscopy (real-time X-rays) to look at the uterus in the evaluation of infertility.  Dye is injected into the uterus and is used to evaluate shape of the uterine cavity and whether the fallopian tubes are open or blocked.
